Autodidact-ism is a driving force in sculpture. We spend so much of our time in the studio "figuring it out". As an autodidact, learning how to teach yourself is one of the most important skills one can acquire. Life as a student does not end when you graduate. Self-education is where freedom begins. Through group and individualized demos, the workshop will focus on the processes of the self-taught artist. We will discuss these routines, traits, and skills and apply them to a sculptural narrative of your choice; improving technical literacy while developing creative intelligence.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. - Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.
Kimberly Thomas is a biracial interdisciplinary sculptor and flameworker residing in Detroit, Michigan. She is known for her work's intentionally flawed and unusual motifs as well as her intricate sculptural inventions. A self-taught glass artist, Thomas earned a BFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and spent six years as a special effects make-up artist before she began flameworking in 2009.
Thomas's work is often autobiographical and conveys her unique perception of the world. Drawing her influence from concepts, questions, and theories about human nature, she combines realism and fantasy. She imparts her truth into dark, yet entertaining, narratives. Recurring themes in her work include the undesirable facets of life and human nature, freedom from the corruption imposed by society, and expansion of self-knowledge. Thomas challenges viewers to face what makes them uncomfortable in order to invite opportunities for fresh perspectives and personal development.
Thomas is a prolific artist who is dedicated to her professional and creative growth. In addition to working in her studio in Detroit, Thomas exhibits her work in museums and galleries across the United States. She is a former professor of glass at Salem Community College in New Jersey and a guest instructor at various craft schools and studios, including Penland School of Craft and Pilchuck School of Glass. Most recently, Kim was selected for Pilchuck's Emerging Artists in Residence Program where she plans to continue to evolve and expand her body of work and her artistic vision.
Additional Course Information
- Participation limited to students 18 years of age and up.
- Lunch is available for an additional fee; $75 for 5-day workshops.
- Classes meet 9 am to 5 pm each day. Students will have additional practice time the first four evenings of the course from 5 pm to 9 pm.
- Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.
- Any work from the final day of the course remaining in a kiln will be available for pick up beginning the following Monday. Students may have finished worked shipped for an additional fee.

Cancellation and Refund Policies
- Salem Community College is not responsible for non-refundable travel expenses. There is always a chance, due to unforeseen circumstances, that a class could be cancelled unexpectedly. In these instances, refunds on registration will be issued, and Salem Community College will not be responsible for non-refundable travel expenses.
- Classes are subject to a minimum enrollment policy. In the event that we do not meet our minimum enrollment for a course we will refund your purchase. Students will be notified no later than 45 days prior to their class start date if their workshop is subject to cancellation due to enrollment.
- Student cancellation/refund policy- Cancellations made more than 45 days prior to the start of the class are subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Cancellations made 2 weeks prior to the start of a course will receive a 50% refund for the registration fee. Cancellations within 2 weeks of the course are not eligible for a refund.
